In 2023, as artificial intelligence began its unprecedented surge into mainstream consciousness, I launched Hello, Computer – a series of in-depth interviews exploring the human side of the AI revolution.

Conducted during the transformative period when ChatGPT was reshaping our understanding of artificial intelligence, these conversations capture a pivotal moment in technological history through the eyes of those creating, using, and contemplating its implications.

AI and aliens

Senior Astronomer at SETI, Seth Shostak, discusses the organisation’s search for extraterrestrial intelligence using radio signals, with advancements in technology allowing the monitoring of millions of frequency channels simultaneously. Shostak explains that SETI’s primary focus is searching for extraterrestrial intelligence using radio signals. They use large antennas to point them at nearby star systems known or suspected to have planets, looking for signals confined in frequency space.


AI and pornography

Dr Megan Maas is a Human Development and Family Studies assistant professor at Michigan State University. Her research investigates adolescent and emerging adult sexual and romantic experiences and how parents, schools, and media can impact those experiences for better and for worse. For over 13 years, Dr Maas has served as a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, and expert contributor on issues revolving around adolescent sexuality, the sexualization of girls, pornography use, and parent-child communication about sexuality at universities and organizations across the country.


AI and killer robots

Rob Sparrow is a philosopher who deals in the often uncomfortable real-world ethical implications of adopting new technologies. He looks at the advances in all walks of science and engineering, from artificial intelligence to genetic engineering, and discusses fundamental issues of democracy and consent. His research interests include political philosophy, applied ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, media ethics, the just war theory, the ethics of science and technology, and philosophical arguments with real-world implications.
